80% Booties

...and 20% unwoven yarn. I'm almost done. I started on the final part while watching Obama put the smack-down on American insurance companies this afternoon.

As I noted in a previous post, I have made booties in the past, but these booties are much more serious: bigger booties, smaller needle size, thicker yarn combination, and a lot more time to knit this beautiful, tight weave. I'm using a combination of marmalade Rowan kidsilk haze and a rich summerberry silk tweed so they won't be too hot for little baby feet in summertime air conditioning. Should fit for a few months, rather than a few weeks. Here's the deal so far:

See the three pot-holder squares on the right? Well, the unfinished bit on the needle will make a fourth equivalent pot-holder square, and each booty uses two squares. (Perhaps I should call them slippers or shoes...typing booty over and over again is starting to feel silly.) See the Susan Anderson pattern here, and here's a version that I am not making (no thanks on the cutesy little flowers):

The version that I'm crafting will actually make use of the fact that the upper part of the shoe is a folded square. I'm going to thread a beautiful, red/orange/brown ribbon through before I sew it closed so that mom can tie the shoe on and make adjustments for leg chubbiness during a few months of wear.

I promise photos tomorrow when I finish up. I have to go to the yarn store to get a new yarn needle since I somehow lost both of mine recently.
