Actually it's a growth spurt but it's characterized more by fussing than by growing, so far as I can tell. It started yesterday (or maybe the day before?) with increased eating - every 1 to 1.5 hours. That in itself is exhausting, but add to the mix the fussiness that arrived today and it's a grand old party over here. Earlier I tried to feed him and he acted like I was shooting scalding hot magma into his mouth, pulling off and beating my boob like an ape. I read on kellymom that this could be due to the fact that my supply is just now catching up with his increased demand due to this growth spurt, so my let-down reflex isn't as strong as usual and he got mad at the slower flow. Anyway, it's really stressful to try to feed a baby who acts like you're trying to make him eat lava.
It's now 10:20 PM, more than an hour past the time at which he usually passes out stone cold for up to 4 hours. But instead he's fitful. Been up once already and Jay had to shush him like crazy to get him back to sleep after two or three good attempts were ruined by the dreaded startles.
By the way, anyone who could invent a way to allow infants to sleep on their stomachs again would make a trillion dollars, guaranteed. How many billions of hours of sleep have parents lost since 1994, when the SIDS prevention guidelines outlawed stomach sleeping? Not that I would put Jupe on his belly, but if there were a safe way I would do it in a second. Man, those startles are a bitch.
